When looking at fill options for a PCP air rifle it is not like you can head to you local home improvement store and pick up any compressor or even hand pump to fill your PCP with air. For those not familiar with Precharged Pneumatic Rifles also known as PCP Airguns. you are typically dealing with pressures ranging from 3000 - 4500 PSI or for my friends accross the pond, 207 - 310 BAR. Your options are to buy a high pressure air hand pump, which in a pinch is great however although it gets the job done, it is very labor intensive and requires a workout to complete a standard fill. Another option is to buy a suitable scuba, scba or rated high pressure air tanks and get it filled at a local dive shop. I have used this mehod for numeour years however when your supply tank pressure goes below your PCP Fill Pressure your shot count will decrease and at some point that can effect your consistency in enery delivered shot to shot, extreme spread can and will increase and accuracy will be hampered. At this point your forced to refill your supply tank. And in many cases this happens when in the field or on a day that the dive shop is closed. Another option is to revery back to the hand pump, that becomes a workout. Just my luck....

This is where a PCP Compressor becomes an essential piece of gear. A PCP Compressor comes in many forms. At one time until recent, a PCP compressor was not very portable, nor was it affordable for most airgun enhusiast. It was common for some compressors to top the $6000+ mark. Many compressor still remain over $1000 and remain out of reach for most users. Although high end compressors are designed to fill large tanks, even scuba supply tanks, the average user just need s a compressor to top off thier PCP air rifle. In the recent years and technology developments, there has been an array of manufacures that have scaled down the size of the compressors for portability and have made these units much more affordable. And this is where we decided to test the ORCAIR 4500psi Portable PCP Compressor. Our findings thus far has been impressive.

The Orcair 4500psi Air Compressor has exceeded my expectations. Let me explain why I have decided to use this as my primary compressor to fill my PCP Rifles. First off, a lot of lower end PCP Compressors require use of a water-cooling system. While this sounds great, it really makes those best suited for non-portable non field use fills. This compressor weighs slightly over 16lbs. Not too heavy to carry to the range or field and is very compact in design. Another design aspect I like is that is has a built-in power supply. Not all manufactures have this feature, and several have an independent power supply that you must tether to the compressor. That is just another item you would be forced to carry around with you and is not practical for field use.

The Orcair model has a built in power supply while still making for a compact overall size. Another design aspect I like is that this Orcair model has a digital LCD smart computer of sorts. Most compressors use an analog gauge with analog shut off pressure regulation. The Orcair allows for digital pressure and compressor temperature readouts. It offers the user to select between psi and bar for pressure and Celsius and Fahrenheit for temperature.

Orcair also has smart technology built in this compressor. It will not start up if it is under a pressure load. If it senses pressure, it will not start up and prevent damage to your compressor. If under pressure you simply bleed the pressure off with pressure valve, close the valve and you are ready to run the compressor. In addition, if you are working off 12v battery power, it has a sensor that will shut your unit off anytime battery voltage drops below 10 volts. This is a safety mechanism to prevent battery damage. Just an added touch found in this Orcair model.

So how does it perform? I was able to fill a 350cc tank from 0psi to 250bar in 12minutes and 20 seconds. I never run my tank below 1000psi in normal settings so this fill time would be even shorter in duration. The overall DB is around 86bd so it's not too loud although it is not dead silent. High pressure compressors normally are much louder, so I was incredibly happy with this.

This unit also features the user the ability to select 100v A/C or 12v DC. If you want to use it in your home or shop simply plug it in. If you decide you want to carry it to the range or in the field if and you have access to a 12v battery, you will be set. I have been testing this with a high amp lithium battery that is about the size of a motorcycle battery, and it has worked well. That makes it easy to carry in the field for emergency PC top offs.

I cannot really think of anything I do not like about this unit. It seems so far to tick off all the check marks. I would suggest this unit to anyone that is looking for a unit they can use at home or in the field. I rarely give something 5 stars however this unit thus far deserves a 5-star rating.
